“It’s not a new phenomenon for state money to go to a private institution,” State Sen. Jabo Waggoner said at a delegation meeting. The legislature has supported other private colleges, like Tuskegee University, in the past – mainly through consortiums.

He and other state lawmakers from the Jefferson County delegation are proposing a plan to spend $30 million of the state’s American Rescue Plan and Education Trust Fund money to bail out the private college, which has been in financial distress for years. In fall 2021, the school reported 276 full-time employees. That number included 101 faculty, about half of whom have tenure status.
A few hundred students can make a big difference for small colleges, who rely on enrollment and endowments to keep operating funds flowing.
