Star Wars fans have long debated whether the dark side is a natural part of the Force or its corruption. The origin story of the cave in which Luke trains on Dagobah suggests the latter, given its power only by a horrific battle to the death.
While the dark side of the Force is often presented as a natural part of existence, Star Wars Legends totally undercut this idea by giving a location from Luke Skywalker's Jedi training a shocking origin. In a famously ominous scene in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda takes Luke Skywalker to a dark side-infused cave during his Jedi training on Dagobah, deeming it a “domain of evil.
The Force and its dark side are a key component of the Star Wars franchise, yet the films, their ancillary material, and even their creators and fans don’t always agree on how they’re defined.
Although Minch’s opponent is not a Sith Lord , the unnamed former Jedi is shown to be extremely powerful in the dark side, using it to grow to massive sizes and divide himself into many miniature versions of himself. He also repeatedly provoked Minch throughout their duel, and although the Jedi Knight defeated him, the victory was tainted by Minch’s panic and rage. This was enough to leave a lasting dark side presence in the Dagobah cave.
When the dark side user died, his body dissolved into the cave, and his sinister spirit remained bound to the location, which shows the difference between dark side spirits and Force ghosts. Dark side users become malevolent and dangerous but restricted to a specific place or object, while light-side users become apparitions who help others wherever and whenever they can.
In this story giving new context to the key location from Luke Skywalker's Jedi training, it's shown that Dagobah’s Dark Side Cave was an ordinary part of the planet’s natural terrain until this duel, demonstrating the definition and origin of the Force's dark side as applied to the original and prequel Star Wars trilogies.
