Luke Wilson picks Lizzo over Beyoncé, Miranda Lambert performs, Taylor Sheridan honored at Texas gala
The scene at the Commodore Perry Estate for the 2023 Texas Medal of Arts Awards cocktail reception hosted by the Texas Cultural Trust.Texas ranks 46th in the nation for arts education and arts funding, according to the Texas Cultural Trust. So every two years, the organization hosts a star-studded Texas Medal of Arts Awards to coincide with the Texas Legislature session.
"Elected officials do not see the arts as primary, they see them as secondary," said Heidi Marquez-Smith, CEO of the Texas Cultural Trust."This event only occurs every biennium to coincide with the legislative session to show why it's important to invest and highlight the incredible talent that's been cultivated in the state. It's the highest honor here in Texas.
She and fellow honorees mingled and made their case during a cocktail party at the Commodore Perry Estate, brunch at the Texas Governor's Mansion, awards show ceremony and gala dinner from Feb. 21-22. "I'm a visual artist who works in media collage that deals with race and beauty," Roberts explained."If we see ourselves in other people, we won't treat them as badly."
"I couldn't be the artist I am today without arts education. I remember all of my art teachers," she said."Arts funding is the first thing that gets chopped down and reduced. I hope people realize we need artists in all facets of our community, to create beauty and mark time. People devalue art in lieu of sports. Everything is about football, but the arts are also very important.
