I'm a British writer who loves indies, reviewing games regardless of platform or budget, with a soft spot for anything retro. I've been on juries for BAFTA and Gamescom.

, looks like a promising blast from the past: building on simple foundations to add a new storyline, pilots and ships, character development, and in-level challenges for high-score replayability.was as spartan as games of the era got–all you needed to do was land on different platforms for points.’s effort to expand upon its source material goes so far that it’s more in tune with another 2D interstellar classic: the underratedlacks a certain spark.

You start with a classic, unarmed craft: one button to power it, with directional travel and gravity guiding your path. It can be customized with up to three abilities; you unlock more as the game progresses and can adapt these to your strengths–or help streamline your attempts to get all-important gold medals.

Missions begin simply because things are mostly well with the world. Of course, this doesn’t last long, as portals open up everywhere and everything goes sideways. The fabric ofthen transforms from benign point-to-point affairs to daring runs in increasingly hostile environments, involving rescue runs, deliveries, exploration, defense, and resource gathering.

Getting gold, or even silver, levels up your chosen pilot and gives them randomized abilities, meaning you have a selection of “right people for the job” the further you progress. However, tough and unsuccessful runs take their toll in a different way–sanity is their second measure, which is lost with each bump or crash, resulting in weird and somewhat wonderful hallucinations that take over the screen, distracting you from your objective and often making you mistake a powerup for, say, a bomb.
