UPDATE: A massive earthquake that flattened buildings as people slept in parts of Turkey and Syria has killed at least 1,500 people and wounded thousands of others.

Officials warned the death toll would likely rise, with many reported trapped under destroyed buildings after the magnitude 7.8 quake struck at 4:17am local time just north of Turkey's Gaziantep, near the Syrian border, per the United States Geological Survey . Tremors were felt in Cyprus, Lebanon and Egypt.

Syrian state media said at least 326 people were killed and over 1,000 others injured in government-held areas. Medical and rescue groups said more than 221 Syrians had died in National security adviser Jake Sullivan said in an emailed statement the U.S. was "profoundly concerned" by reports of the destructive quake and stood "ready to provide any and all" assistance needed.
