Make it official for Dallas' Koreatown | Opinion

The Greater Dallas Korean American Chamber of Commerce is pushing for the official recognition, and it already has the support of council member Omar Narvaez. The idea has been floated for a while, but it gained momentum after last year’s shooting at a hair salon, which was deemed a hate crime. Although those wounded are recovering, businesses in the area are still reeling from the shooting.
Lee is also well aware that South Korea is a hot item in popular culture right now with growing interest in K-pop and a rising film industry. Koreatown has the potential to become a magnet not only for food. “We are here and you can taste Korean culture and have a feel for it,” Lee said. He is also envisioning a cultural center, a far cry from the days when this area was a depressed industrial sector, eventually revitalized by Asian immigrants.
