Walter S. Zilinski Jr. and two women were arrested at the man’s home in Pennsville Township on Feb. 10.
A Salem County man who died in police custody in February was denied timely medical care and ignored by officers when he showed signs of distress, according to a tort claim notice filed by an attorney representing his estate.
When the two women complained they were cold, officers retrieved coats for them, but no similar considerations were provided for Zilinski, the attorney noted, writing, “Police failed to execute the search warrant in compliance with the procedures of the State of New Jersey and left him in the cold without giving him proper medical attention.”
Zilinski vomited and continued struggling to breathe until his skin turned gray, the attorney stated, adding: “It was too late when the officers called for an ambulance.”
