A man who was shot by officers in Garland is in critical condition in a hospital and is accused of leading authorities on a chase Monday afternoon before opening fire on them, according to police.
Officers tried to stop a white car about 5:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of South Jupiter Road and Russwin Drive, the Garland Police Department announced in a news release. The driver of the white car refused to stop, and led officers on a chase before stopping less than a mile away in a residential area in the 3900 block of Glenhaven Drive, police said.
Police said the driver got out of his car and “produced a weapon,” and opened fire on the officers’ vehicle. A officer who has worked at the department for four years and a second officer with three years of experience, got out of their cars and returned fire, striking the man, according to the release.
Emergency crews transported the man, whose name police have not released, to a hospital, where he was in critical condition Monday evening. No officers were injured, according to Garland police spokesman Richard Maldonado. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will review police video footage of the incident Maldonado said. The two officers were placed on administrative leave, per department policy.. Hojun Choi covers breaking news. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
