A Chicago man who pleaded guilty to the road rage murder of a father of five in Waukegan has been sentenced to 65 years in prison, according to Lake County prosecutors.
He had pleaded guilty this spring and is facing a murder charge in Cook County in an unrelated case, prosecutors said.Brown shot Young to death on the evening of Oct. 9, 2020, near the intersection of Eighth and Jackson streets. Police said that Young and Brown had gotten into a minor traffic accident.
After the accident, Brown got out of his vehicle brandishing a handgun and fired at Young. Several witnesses identified Brown as the shooter, and he confessed to Waukegan police, authorities said.He acted as his own attorney after dismissing private counsel and the public defender’s office, prosecutors said.
“This devastating incident left five young people without the love and guidance of a father, a wife without a partner, and a community without a beloved friend,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. “This case is just another example of how easy access to weapons can turn everyday incidents like fender benders into a fight for life and death.”
Brown faced a minimum term of 45 years in prison, Judge George Strickland imposed the sentence after a hearing that included testimony from Young’s wife and eldest son about the effect of by his death.
