Atlanta’s Alexis Ruby was the runway standout of MarcJacobs’s fall/winter 2020 show.
Sometimes helping out your friends leads to unexpected opportunities. This time last year, Alexis Ruby’s photographer friends asked her to pose for a few pictures, and like most images these days, they wound up on social media. At the time, the Atlanta native thought nothing of it, music was her focus. “I grew up singing southern gospel music and traveling with my family.
Unlike many of her new model peers, Ruby, 23, is entering the industry as an adult rather than a wide-eyed teenager and it shows. Curvy, confident, and fun, she’s been a breath of fresh air on the runway. For Ruby, who made her debut during the Jacobs’s show last September, working with the designer and his team including casting director, Anita Bitton has been a dream come true.
As a curvier model working during fashion month, Ruby is well aware of the current shift towards inclusivity of different body types on the runway. Inspired by trailblazers such as, she’s happy to have entered the industry during a period of change. “I’m only here because she paved the way and made it not only possible but made me feel like this is something I could do and be successful at,” says Ruby.
Currently blazing a trail of her thanks to her fashion success, the singer-turned-model is ready for what comes next. “I didn’t expect to get as much support as I have because I am just living my truth and being myself, but people love and are inspired by it,” she says. “The response has been amazing.”Sign Up Now
