'Now that we are once again in the rainy months of spring in Northeast Ohio and March Mudness has returned, I have been thinking about an often-overlooked plant attribute: the size of its root structure,' writes gardening columnist Susan Brownstein.

. An expert in creating and maintaining healthy soil, he explained to me that plant roots have a vital role in controlling stormwater runoff and erosion.

Much of my yard is an example of compacted clay that has large areas of standing water from now until about July. We tried aeration and seeding one fall, but the most noticeable effect was the kids giggling at the oblong plugs of soil that dotted the yard for a few weeks, as if Clifford the Big Red Dog had paid a visit. The problem is one of depth—even a powered aerator is only penetrating a few inches into the soil.
