2022 is the year of 'Descendant.' The award-winning film by MargaretLBrown and Kemjacks tells the story of Africatown and the descendants of the survivors of the Clotilda. Read about it: 22Alabamians
From there it was all anticipation until October, when the film finally began streaming on Netflix, and when it got. Since then the whirlwind has continued: Director Margaret Brown and University of South Alabama folklorist Kern Jackson, its co-writers, have taken the film to audiences as far away as Amsterdam and London.

The story of Africatown was never a secret, exactly. But it never was celebrated outside the community itself. Even the rediscovery of an artifact as provocative as the Clotilda didn’t guarantee that would be set straight.
