Nestled in the richly biodiverse water of the Atlantic, the Azores archipelago is a hidden paradise. This is a rare opportunity to experience the islands, and their lush vegetation, volcanic craters, lagoons and picturesque towns. Accompanied by a team of marine experts including marine biologist Jon Copley, you will spend time both at sea and on land surrounded by a host of different species.
Before dinner, you will be joined by marine biologist Jon Copley, who will be accompanying you for the next three days. Jon will give an introductory talk on the biodiversity of the Azores and their importance to our global ecosystems, as well as the challenges they face and his experience working with conservation teams around the world.
In the evenings after dinner, Jon will give two more talks. First, on the current research on the deep sea vents surrounding the Azores. These hydrothermal vents have only been discovered and studied in the past few decades, and with some organisms surviving purely chemosynthetically and not requiring sunlight for photosynthesis, they are shedding new light on our understanding of life in the oceans.
