For the fifth time in their past 10 games, the Astros scored one run or fewer.

Astros righthander Brandon Bielak, making his first start since September 2021, kept his team in the game by working his way out of trouble numerous times as multiple runners got on base in the first four innings. He got the Mariners to line into one double play and ground into two others.

Bielak limited the damage to a Julio Rodriguez leadoff home run in the third. He was then hurt by a two-out error that inning by José Abreu, with a likely inning-ending ground ball going through the first baseman’s legs. Bielak’s tough luck continued in the fifth inning. He issued a two-out walk to load the bases and was lifted for Matt Gage to face J.P. Crawford in a lefty/lefty matchup. Gage struck out Crawford, but not before he was called for a balk that forced in the run to put Seattle up 3-0.Outfielder Kyle Tucker, who entered the series in a 2-for-22 slump, drove in a run for the third consecutive game.

Tucker’s seventh-inning RBI single plated Abreu, who had doubled for his first extra-base hit since April 25. But the rally fizzled when with the tying run on board, reliever Matt Brash struck out Jake Meyers to end the threat. The Astros again brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning. But after Yordan Alvarez singled, Abreu grounded into a double play.
