When Mark Howerton was sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing Cayle Mandadi, he lost rights he won't immediately regain if he's paroled.

It was the second trial for Howerton. The first ended when the jury was hopelessly deadlocked in December 2019. After that, his defense attorney, John T. Hunter, sought to dismiss the indictment, an argument that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court before all appeals were rejected and the case was set for a new trial.
Howerton told police they had “rough make-up sex,” and at some point while they drove to Houston, Mandadi stopped breathing in the passenger seat of his car. He took her to a hospital in Luling and emergency room personnel conducted CPR immediately when they found her unresponsive, covered with bruises, and partially nude.
