The deal will move MASN and MASN2 off of Comcast’s most basic cable package onto a more expensive tier.
MASN and Comcast reached an agreement Friday to carry Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals baseball games on the network throughout the Mid-Atlantic this season. The agreement between the two sides was scheduled to end in February, which threatened to interrupt the way most baseball fans in the region consume their teams’ games.
In recent years, MASN has not reached carriage renewals with cable providers RCN and Charter. It is not available on streaming services YouTube TV and Hulu. There is also no standalone streaming option to purchase MASN.“We appreciate MASN working with us to find a solution to maintain MASN and MASN2 on our platform that also provides our customers with a choice," Comcast spokeswoman Jenni Gatta said in a statement.She added that the majority of Comcast customers in D.C.
The more expensive tier costs around $20 more than the basic Popular package. Comcast will run a promotion that offers it free to fans who want to upgrade for three months, followed by a $10 fee for the next three months before the full price change takes effect. Customers with the Popular package will see their cable bill reduced by several dollars.
MASN general manager John McGuinness noted in a statement that the network is still carried by more than 20 providers. Comcast came to similar agreements in recent months with the regional sports networks that broadcast the games of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners.
