After play was delayed more than three hours by morning fog, veterans Padraig Harrington and Matt Kuchar were the standouts from the early finishers.

Matt Kuchar acknowledges the crowd after his birdie putt on No. 18 on the first day of the 2023 Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio on Thursday, Mar. 30, 2023.Playing just his third PGA Tour event of the season and the first since being elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame earlier this month, 51-year-old Padraig Harrington shot a 4-under par opening round Thursday at the Valero Texas Open, stepping off the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio with a share of the lead.

“This course has been good to me over the years,” Kuchar said. “I certainly have a comfort level, but I also know I could pack up tomorrow just as easily as anyone.” Kuchar, a 44-year-old who ranked as high as No. 4 in the world in 2013, opened his day with a bogey on 10 but notched four birdies without a bogey through the rest of the back nine.

With the final groups starting as late as 5:51 p.m. Thursday, many from the afternoon session were unable to complete their rounds before darkness suspended play for the day. Those still needing to complete their opening round are expected to do so Friday morning before picking up their planned morning starts for round two, putting play back on schedule by the end of Friday, barring further delays.

The tour initially announced a return to play for 9:45 a.m., but lingering conditions pushed the resumption to 11:20 a.m.
