“Kevin Love was one of the first people I called, and he couldn’t have been more positive about the city and the organization. He told me it was a no-brainer,” Max Strus said when asked Monday about his decision to join the Cavs.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Even with him more than 1,200 miles away, playing in Miami now, Cavs franchise legend Kevin Love delivered one final assist for his former team.“Kevin was one of the first people I called, and he couldn’t have been more positive about the city and the organization. He told me it was a no-brainer,” Strus said when asked Monday about his decision to join the Cavs. “He was like, ‘Max, you’re everything they need. You’ll be a great fit.
When Strus’ destination list finally came together -- and the Cavs learned they were on it -- he reached out to various confidants for advice. Strus and Love were teammates for just about four months following Love’s unceremonious Cleveland exit in February -- a nine-year run that ended with a contract buyout. But the two quickly grew close. Their lockers were right next to each other inside FTX Arena.
Eventually, they found a helper, bringing the cap-rich San Antonio Spurs into the deal -- and landing the coveted sniper the team called at 6:01 p.m. on the opening night of free agency. In the wee hours of Monday morning, before the start of media day, Strus arrived at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and spent about 45 minutes inside the practice facility on the top floor of the arena, running sprints and hoisting shots. Strus also basically lapped the field during the team’s beep test -- the conditioning test that signals the unofficial start of camp.
