Strength. Physicality. Temperament. Everything is as advertised with the 328-pound nose tackle, who practiced in pads Monday for the first time. But Smith is...

“Get off the ball,” Smith said. “Get off the rock. It’s as simple as that. I be slow off the ball sometimes.”

During his first practice in pads, Smith was late off the ball in an 11-on-11 drill. The delay freed up the Cowboys’ other large Smiths — left tackle Tyron and left guard Tyler — to jar him on an initial double team. Tyron Smith kept driving to further displace Mazi, who eventually used his strength to anchor and push back the eight-time Pro Bowler. In a game with full-scale contact, that rep probably ends more in Tyron Smith’s advantage.

Interior defensive linemen are widely considered within the NFL to have among the toughest transitions to make from the college level. Offensive linemen are stronger and far more technically sound in the pro league. The cadence that NFL offenses use to sync the snap also is more complex and thus less predictable.AdvertisementAdvertisement

“It’s understanding where his visual keys are at those points in time and what’s the key to get off the rock,” defensive line coach Aden Durde said Wednesday. “There’s a lot of learning going on. He is growing. I think the game every day is slowing down for him. He’s got great veterans in the room to tap into. … It’s such a tight group. They want each other to be good.

“The get-off, it’s coming. Yesterday was better than the day before. At times, especially in this sport, development is overlooked. You want it now. Right? Sam [Williams] was a different player in the spring to what he was in training camp last year. Look at Chauncey [Golston]. As we go through this, now Mazi … you’ve got to go through that process.”Last year, the Cowboys created pressure on a league-high 43.2% of quarterback dropbacks.
