Too many of our children are still not receiving the education they need to succeed...
early in their education journey rarely catch up. These kids don’t drop out in elementary school, but it’s pretty clear that kids who don’t read well rarely pursue post-secondary degrees.
Our analysis shows that roughly 20 percent of HISD graduates will go on to complete a two-year or four-year degree, whileSo maybe the time has come for Houstonians to turn the page, stop being angry about the TEA intervention and instead take the position that we’ll never put ourselves in this situation again.Maybe we all begin to tout Houston as the “Education City” even though we aren’t.
Maybe now is the time for disparate parties — elected officials, business leaders and parents — to move past their worst fears and work towards their best hopes. Let’s do our part to support Superintendent Miles so that our youth find themselves in a better place in the future.
