Rams going to Super Bowl because for the first time they matched and even succeeded the 49ers’ physicality.

The 49ers stayed true to who they are Sunday and it wasn’t good enough.

They knew who the 49ers were, having lost to them twice this season and six times dating back to Kyle Shanahan’s arrival as head coach. The Rams threw everything they had into dealing with the 49ers’ physicality. The departing Jimmy Garoppolo will bear the brunt of the criticism because he’s the quarterback.

It was hard not to detect some sarcasm in Kittle’s words. The 49ers, whether they verbalized it or not, enjoyed that they were having their way with a team that traded for Matthew Stafford, Jalen Ramsey and Von Miller to go along with an already stunningly talented roster. The 49ers thought they were tougher and more physical. Better football players.

“They did a good job by making us have to switch up and not be as committed to the run, especially late,” left tackle Trent Williams said. “They flooded the box. A couple of times they brought in an extra D-lineman. When you’re the 49ers and you’re known for coming in and running the ball, with the type of players they got you can’t imagine they’ll come out and continue to get beat by the same scheme. They switched it up a little bit. Kudos to them. That’s football.
