A federal grand jury in Grand Rapids, Mich., has indicted a McKinney doctor on charges of defrauding health care insurers and creating false medical records, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of MichiganAmong the allegations in the indictment are that Dr. Daniel Castro — an otolaryngologist or ear, nose and throat physician — performed surgeries on patients “whose symptoms, history, and computed tomography scans did not support the medical necessity of such procedures.
In addition, the indictment alleges that Castro “routinely billed for removing diseased tissue from inside his patient’s sinuses when diseased tissue did not truly exist and billed for performing surgery on sinus cavities that did not exist, to increase his compensation.” Castro is charged with 34 counts of health care fraud and eight counts of making false statements relating to health care matters, according to the Department of Justice news release.
Castro, 70, currently lives in McKinney, according to court documents. He was employed by Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek, Mich., from February 2015 until May 2017. Castro’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 22. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison for each of the health care fraud charges and up to five years in prison on each of the false statement charges, according to the release.
