A mom and her two sons all coach different varsity tennis teams in New Jersey
Nutley girls tennis coach Valerie Martin went up against her son, West Essex coach Joseph Martin, for the first time last weekValerie, Jeffrey, and Joseph Martin are used to playing tennis and other sports versus each other. But what about coaching against one another?
Nutley and West Essex happened to meet again by coincidence in the consolation semifinals of the Essex County Tournament just five days later . Last Thursday, they faced off in a special match at the Nutley Tennis Club on clay . Since then, the couple has shared their wealth of knowledge about the sport down to their sons who are now doing the same to the kids they coach at the high school level both for and now against each other.
“We certainly have our mother-son moments out there, but our focus and intents are always aligned,” Joseph Martin said. “We understand our job is to not only strive for winning teams, but to help the maturity, confidence, and spread love and respect for the sport to the girls and boys we coach. Our players are still kids in the end and we are very conscious of all they go through on a daily basis being in high school.
“When I got into coaching, my mom took me on as an assistant when I was just starting out. I also got into education because of her. I get my competitive edge from my mom, too,” Jeffrey said. “She is the most competitive person I know and that has rubbed off on me. She coaches that way. She knows what good play and practice looks like and she demands that from her teams. I learned a lot from coaching with her and I am a better coach now because of that experience.
