Megan Rapinoe, the U.S. soccer icon, exits the national team stage on a memorable day in Chicago.
Sunday’s farewell fell on a sumptuous autumn afternoon at Soldier Field with family, friends and fiancée Sue Bird on hand for a 2-0 victory over South Africa.
An offside infraction nullified a first-half cross that Alex Morgan pumped into the net. Four minutes into the second half, Rapinoe’s corner kick was punched out by the goalkeeper and headed in by Emily Sonnett. Rapinoe set up the goal but, because the ball had been deflected, she wasn’t awarded an assist.
“Pinoe’s not just a special person to me and this team but honestly to the world,” Purce said. “She’s just a really special presence, and she radiates acceptance and love. And to lose someone like that in your locker room, it hurts, but it’s just such a beautiful moment and I’m so happy she was able to leave with this type of peace and reverence that she deserved.”“I felt like I was able to grow up in front of you,” she said during a tear-filled address to the crowd.
