The lawsuit seeks compensation for the four children of Melissa Perez, a San Antonio woman who was shot and killed by police on June 23.
Melissa Perez, second from right, was killed June 23 in an interaction with San Antonio Police officers. Lawyers representing her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Friday. The family of a woman who was shot and killed by police officers last month has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of San Antonio and the three San Antonio Police Department officers involved in the shooting.
The lawsuit claims the city is liable for Perez’s death due to its policies, procedures, trainings and lack of enforcement.
“The officers involved in this incident didn’t follow proper training, policies and procedures,” Segovia said. “We will seek a speedy resolution through the judicial system.” The lawsuit claims the SAPD officer that called for backup had time to check Perez’s history, which would have confirmed she suffered from mental illness and had previously been taken into protective custody, but didn’t, and that the department’s Mental Health Unit should have been called.
