By Andrew Restuccia Updated March 20, 2020 7:08 pm ET WASHINGTON—A staffer in Vice President Mike Pence’s office tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Mr. Pence’s spokeswoman said Friday.
“Neither President Trump nor Vice President Pence had close contact with the individual,” Katie Miller, Mr. Pence’s press secretary, said in a statement. “Further contact tracing is being conducted in accordance with CDC guidelines.”The announcement marks the first known positive test for the virus among the White House staff, and it comes amid new concerns about the safety of Washington politicians, government officials and those who work for them.
Mr. Trump tested negative for the virus, the White House said, after coming into contact at his Florida resort with Brazilian officials who later tested positive for the disease. Several members of the White House staff who interacted with the Brazilian delegation or others who tested positive for the virus have worked from home as a precaution, but none of them are known to have contracted the virus.Mr. Pence has previously said he hasn’t been tested for the virus.
