CAR Magazine UK drives the Mercedes-Benz CLE coupe, a replacement for the C-Class and E-Class coupes and a rival for the BMW 4 Series
► C-Class interior, E-Class enginesPersonal coupes have been some of the best cars that Mercedes has built over the years.
All of the pure combustion models benefit from Merc’s EQ Boost mild hybrid tech, providing a wodge of extra torque to smooth out the gaps in the engine’s power delivery. If you like your hybrids to be hot rather than lemon and herb, a CLE 300 ewill join the range – though Merc hasn’t offered up any figures, we’d expect this to mirror the 300 e powertrain you get in the C- and E-Class with a 2.0-litre four-pot, 60+ miles of EV range and a little over 300bhp on tap.
Driven in a more relaxed manner, it’s excellent. The ride was a bit more floaty on the 300 than on the 450 – almost like air suspension, though the CLE is conventionally sprung. Regardless, it’s good at ironing out most larger bumps, with just a bit of patter over poor surfaces disturbing the refinement.
The 12.3-inch driver display is clear and legible, though the steering wheel with its four spokes of touch-sensitive controls remains unnecessarily complicated.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class mixes big range and big styleThis is the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class. It inherits a lot of learnings from the extremely slippery Vision EQXX, but brings it to a car that’s a lot more ready for production. Also a lot more affordable. The current CLA is one of the most affordable Mercedes-Benz cars you can buy in the U.S., and with any luck this future one won’t break the bank, either.
