Ten World War II merchant marines from across the nation journeyed to Washington for the gold medal ceremony., Jack Laub, James Sciple, Bob Ross, George Offenhauser, Sr, George Shaw and Dave Yoho. U.S. Rep. Al Green’s legislation, H.R. 39 — Honoring our World War II Merchant Mariners Act of 2021 — would have accorded surviving the merchant mariners a payment of $25,000. The bill“A medal cannot replace the lives lost or make amends for lack of compensation that was rightfully earned,” said Green. “Nevertheless, I am pleased to see the merchant mariners honored in some measure and look forward to continue working with Mr. Mills and the rest of the mariners to rectify a historic injustice.
In 2011, Laub was made a “Chevalier” of the French Legion of Honor, for his contribution to the U.S’s crucial role in the liberation of France during WWII.
