Stephen Sondheim's musical about the long, complicated friendships of a trio of creatives, savaged by critics when it debuted in 1981, has been restaged in an acclaimed revival starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez.
At the Hudson Theatre on Broadway, three friends are playing three friends, in a revival of"Merrily We Roll Along," with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
When asked the most challenging part of playing the role," she replied,"I think it's just the pain of her, and of someone who isn't getting what they want, or maybe isn't even sure of what they want." Still, working with writer George Furth, Sondheim would not give up on the show."He's not somebody who believes you have to do it one way," said Maria Friedman, director of the Broadway revival. She's also a well-known British actor who developed a close friendship with Sondheim. [She played Mary in an early '90s British production of"Merrily," where Sondheim was fine-tuning the show.
