The latest: Metro employee killed, three people hurt in shooting at Potomac Avenue station

A Metro employee died in a shooting Wednesday morning at the Potomac Avenue Metro station that also injured three others. Police said one person was taken into custody.

Metro suspended rail service on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines between the Federal Center SW station and the Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road stations. The transit agency advised commuters to use Metrobus Route 30 as an alternative. Jennings said the gunman then went down to the fare gate, where more shots rang out. He said he turned around and ran back up the escalator and yelled at other commuters to run because of the shooting.

Transit police last year investigated 129 Part One crimes on the Metrobus system, which includes the most serious offenses such as homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, rape and arson, a figure that is 33 more than in 2021, when pandemic-era ridership also was lower. Among less serious Part Two crimes, which include assaults resulting in minor injuries, fraud and drug offenses, transit police investigated 554 incidents on buses in 2021 and 665 last year.
