Metro pitches underpass to ease East End concerns about University Corridor BRT route. Is it enough?
“We heard very loud and clear an overpass is not what you want,” said Shri Reddy, executive vice-president for planning, engineering and construction for Metropolitan Transit Authority., clears Metro to approve its preferred route for the University Corridor, the 25.3-mile backbone of planned bus rapid transit in the region. A special meeting of Metro’s board is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday.
A Lockwood underpass would allow buses, and emergency vehicles if necessary, to drive below the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, which are another source of frustration for the East End community. A pedestrian and bicycle path also would flow under the tracks, while automobile drivers still would cross the tracks at ground level.Stopped trains still block East End streets. A federal bill could lead to fines for railroads.
Some residents at the Monday meeting hosted by U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, however, remained opposed to the project. Hardened by memories of Metro’s Green Line construction along Harrisburg, many said they have lost faith in the agency’s ability to act as a good neighbor. Lockwood is not the only place Metro faces pushback. The east-west portion, from near Bellaire to the area around the TSU and UH campuses, has been one of the most sought-after transit links in Houston for more than 25 years, but officials have struggled to overcome significant opposition.
