Public Safety Advisory Committee heard riders fed up with crime, drug abuse at LA Metro’s first-ever listening session.

, this meeting was unprecedented because the advisory committee attended and hosted the meeting. Some committee members openly criticized Metro’s response to crime on its transit lines and advocated for changes.

Mastrangelo advocated Metro’s law enforcement partners, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, LAPD and Long Beach Police Department should team up with Metro’s Transit Security Officers and form mini, roving teams that ride the trains. John Kindred, a regular Metro train rider, told the committee he’d broken up fights four or five times and stopped people from doing drugs on the train. Recently he saw someone using cocaine and when he told them to stop, they told Kindred he could take another train car.

Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins reported on Thursday at a Metro board meeting that since April, crime systemwide dropped 54%. The statistics include May, June and July. August figures were not available, she said. “We are hopeful that overall crime reductions we are seeing will continue.”and those who commit violent crimes is working, reported Metro.
