Seven museum exhibition spaces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will no longer bear the name Sackler, the family who owns OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma
LP who have faced intenseThe New York museum and the descendants of Mortimer and Raymond Sackler announced the decision on Thursday.
“The Museum and the families of Dr. Mortimer Sackler and Dr. Raymond Sackler have mutually agreed to take this action in order to allow The Met to further its core mission,” they said in a statement. The spaces affected by the change include the Sackler Wing, which houses Egyptian art and contains the famous Temple of Dendur.
“Our families have always strongly supported The Met, and we believe this to be in the best interest of the Museum and the important mission that it serves,” the Sackler family said.to the opioid crisis and OxyContin, a prescription painkiller containing a morphine derivative called oxycodone. They cultivated an image as global philanthropists, donating millions to the Met and scores of other institutions both in the U.S. and abroad.
