Mexican American landmarks in East Austin are getting state historical markers

The Texas Historical Commission has approved historical markers for four landmarks on the city’s East Side, including Cisco’s Restaurant & Bakery and Pan American Neighborhood Park. | _laterrazas

The effort was spearheaded by the nonprofit Preservation Austin and the Travis County Historical Commission. In order to get these sites recognized, two Preservation Austin

"That's where history lives, within people and their memories and perceptions,” said Lindsey Derrington, Preservation Austin’s executive director. “These buildings are important for their history, but that history is only as important as the connection it makes to our community." It’ll take about a year for the markers to appear at these sites. First, the Texas Historical Commission has to draft the marker text and have it approved by the Travis County Historical Commission and Preservation Austin.Cisco’s Restaurant & Bakery, which dates back to 1950, is located at 1511 E. Sixth Street.
