Surveillance video from a migrant detention center in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, appears to show guards exiting the facility as immigrants remained locked behind bars while a fire engulfed the building.
The fire at the detention center across the Mexican border from El Paso, Texas, resulted in the deaths of at least 38 people, with authorities saying that immigrants in the facility started the blaze after learning they would be deported. The muted video shows two guards walking out of the room, where a door to the locked-up immigrants can be seen, as a fire begins in the corner and quickly gets larger.
Immigrants behind the bars can be seen walking around, with one of them coming up against the barred and locked door. After a few seconds, the migrant retreats from the door but remains behind bars. Smoke and flames engulf the visible area in the 30-second video to the point that only smoke is visible by the end.
The inferno late Monday night also left dozens injured, with several being transported to local hospitals because of their injuries.Authorities said 68 men from Central and South America were being held at the facility when the fire began, per the Associated Press. Most were reported to be from Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, and El Salvador.
The U.S.-Mexico border between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez is one of the most popular places for immigrants to cross the southern border, with reports indicating a recent uptick in the number of people arriving at the border in anticipation of the end of the COVID-era Title 42 immigration policy.
