28 years ago today, Michael Jordan stepped to the plate at Wrigley Field.
This wasn't major-league pitching. This was Cub pitching. There's a difference.
Only the purists will say Jordan's hits didn't count for anything. His grinning mug and wagging tongue made the old yard seem a little warmer than 42 degrees. When he received a standing ovation as he stepped to the plate in the second inning, it had to be the first time in history North and South Siders have agreed on anything.
"I wanted him to hit for the cycle," Cub shortstop Shawon Dunston said."He might have been playing for the Sox, but he is Chicago. Let's not fool ourselves." "You catch the ball and then look up," Sox manager Gene Lamont said."He does it in Birmingham once and his manager will say something. If he does it again . . . that's how you learn."
