Lorenzen pitches six shutout innings, allowing three hits, and the Angels’ bullpen does not allow a baserunner. Ward hits a pair of homers to drive in all three runs.
ANAHEIM — So far the Michael Lorenzen experiment has been a success.
“Yeah, you have to pitch better than good pitching,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said, referencing Cleveland starter and Orange County product Shane Bieber. “And we did. We pitched better than good pitching tonight. And you have to beat the Cy Young guys. If you want to play in October, you got to beat really good pitching because that’s all that’s there.”
“He tries to do too much,” Maddon said. “If he can just stay in attack mode, that sinker is outstanding, the changeup is outstanding. I think as a starter he’s just trying to figure out, what should I do out here. I’ve got all these weapons. I’m a great athlete. I’m always feeling strong, so how do I go about this.”
“You have to be on top of your game and tonight I really wasn’t,” Lorenzen said. “I didn’t have much going for me. To have different pitches to be able to rely on with the two-seamer and cutter, just trying to keep them honest and put the ball in play. I didn’t strike many guys out tonight . I was going for weak contact.”
