Michigan is on the verge of becoming either a state with some of the tightest abortion restrictions or one that provides robust rights for the procedure, reflecting an uncertain future for abortion in battleground states
around the country are poised to ban most abortions if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, while many Democratic-led states are calling for fewer restrictions on abortion and the adoption of new abortion rights under state law.
The state’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, sued local prosecutors last month in an attempt to get the Michigan Supreme Court to declare the state’s 1931 law unconstitutional. Planned Parenthood of Michigan and a local abortion provider filed a similar lawsuit the same day against the state’s Democratic attorney general.
Currently, abortions are relatively easy to obtain in Michigan up to about 24 weeks of pregnancy, the point of fetal viability—reflecting the protection of the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision enshrining abortion rights. Around 30 facilities provide abortion in the state, and on average women drive less than 20 miles to one.
“Whoever the governor is, we’ve been out there advocating that these services are necessary for women,” Mr. Long said.
