Microsoft's famous MIT card-counting blackjack whiz prompts exodus of senior women amid HR complaints and a shift in strategy, insiders say

which is about a group of MIT students who learned to count cards and won millions of dollars in Las Vegas casinos.The company's bet has led to an"exodus" of senior women leaders from the organization, according to multiple people familiar with the situation.

"Eighteen months ago, we decided to adjust our startup efforts to provide a global strategy for improved regional/local partnerships," a Microsoft spokesperson said."We hired an experienced leader to drive this change in approach. It is not uncommon to see strategy shifts and organizational change affect the immediate team."

While Microsoft has many big enterprise customers, it isn't well known for winning business from younger, smaller companies. Its crosstown rival Amazon built its market-leading cloud business byBefore Ma, the insiders said Microsoft couldn't find the right vice president to run this business and wanted to bring in someone who could raise the company's profile in the Silicon Valley startup scene.

Ma has hired mostly male candidates from his personal network into important jobs, and in some cases, these candidates did not have as much experience as current female team members. A Microsoft spokesperson said Ma's leadership team consisted of three female and three male employees and half the leadership team are from typically underrepresented Asian and African American groups.
