Fox News reports that Hall of Famer Jerry West, the inspiration behind the silhouette in the NBA's logo, has died at the age of 86. 'Jerry West, the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 86. His wife, Karen, was by his side.
JON JOHNSON Mike Culbreth, who has taught Yoshukai Karate for more than four decades, certainly didn’t get an endorsement from his parents when he decided to open a training studio.
“As far as we know, this is the longest running Karate program with a city program that has been continuously running in the United States,” Culbreth said, who has been part of the DLS recreation program since 1976 in addition to running his own business. Culbreth remembers driving to his first competition, and more notably the drive home. It was during his first year of taking lessons.
Sadler started the first Karate classes with the City of Dothan in the late 1970s and Culbreth helped him by teaching a class for children. So Culbreth quit his job at Michelin and opened a studio on Ross Clark Circle in the same building he continues to hold his classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, while also teaching classes for the City of Dothan on Tuesdays and Thursdays, currently at the officials building near the Westgate Softball Complex.
“Then we could go to Japan and stay three or four weeks at a time and train there, too. It just got to be where I went from just taking Karate and learning how to do it and got better at it and made a name for ourselves around here in Dothan.
