Residents have complained about the landfill’s strong odors for years
MILPITAS — A dump known for sparking concerns from Milpitas residents over its stinky odors must fork over roughly a quarter million dollars in air quality fines.
This spring, the city released two separate studies about the site’s smell. The first asked residents near the facility to describe the odors, with many replying “sewage,” “septic,” “fecal,” “urine,” “garbage,” “sweet or rotten vegetables,” “rancid,” “putrid,” and “manure.” “We are pleased to have resolved this issue with the District,” landfill operator Republic Services spokesperson Deidre Edgar wrote in a statement. The facility is currently set to operate until at least 2041 and has expanded in size over the years.
