Mining fell by 1.1% in March, less than the expected contraction of 7%

Mining production beat expectations in March, falling less than expected, but the sector will still knock economic growth in the first quarter.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3.4% in the first quarter of 2019 compared with the fourth quarter of 2018 — indicating that the sector will weigh on the GDP figure for the quarter. The sector has also been constrained by load-shedding. SA saw its return in November, with the most severe power cuts the country has seen. There were 26 days of power cuts up to the end of March.
