Minnie Mouse, famous for her red and white polka dot dress will be sporting a blue pantsuit to celebrate Women’s History Month and Disneyland Paris’ 30th anniversary. Here’s how the pantsuit has become a symbol for women’s empowerment.
White pantsuits, in particular, have caught on as a sign of solidarity between female politicians. Geraldine Ferraro wore a white pantsuit to accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for vice president in 1984, and Hillary Clinton also wore a white pantsuit to accept her nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate in 2016. After Cinton’s loss and the 2018 midterm election of many new women in Congress, Democratic congresswomen wore matching white suits to the State of the Union address.
There are additional benefits for women adopting pantsuits. Research indicates that women in pants are perceived differently from those in skirts. Onehad participants evaluate either a fictional female manager in a skirt or a female manager who was wearing pants. The two fictional employees were identical in all other aspects. Participants rated the woman in pants as more competent than the woman wearing a skirt.
Not only have pantsuits have become a symbol of power and professionalism for female politicians and professionals, but younger girls also are adopting pantsuits. Laura Schumacherthat more celebrity preteens were choosing to don pantsuits on the red carpet. In the last few years, tween stars such as Marsai Martin, Skai Jackson, McKenna Grace and Julia Butters all wore pantsuits on the red carpet for various promotional and professional events.
With regard to Minnie, social media reaction seems to indicate strong positive and negative feelings regarding the anthropomorphized mouse’s newest wardrobe addition. Hillary Clinton tweeted the mouse’s pantsuit was “Tres chic.” YetThe negative reaction to Minnie’s new outfit is likely particularly strong because it’s coming just after Green M&M’s signature high-heel boots were traded in for sneakers last week.
