Editor Eddie Hamilton reveals that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’s climactic train sequence was originally the length of a whole movie.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One editor Eddie Hamilton reveals that the film's big train set piece was the length of a full movie in an early cut. Directed by now franchise veteran Christopher McQuarrie, the latest installment in the long-running action franchise sees Tom Cruise return as superspy Ethan Hunt to face off against a deadly AI threat.

Now, in a recent interview with Variety, Hamilton reveals that the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ending train set piece was originally much longer than it ends up being in the movie. The sequence "was about an hour-and-a-half long in our first iteration," Hamilton reveals, adding that they eventually "got it down to like 50 minutes in the finished movie."

Is Mission: Impossible 7 Too Long? The train sequence in Mission: Impossible 7 may have been cut down to 50 minutes, but the film itself is still a whopping two hours and 43 minutes. This makes McQuarrie's sequel the longest movie in the franchise by far, topping Mission: Impossible – Fallout's previous record of two hours and 27 minutes, which itself topped Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation's two hours and 11 minutes.

Despite its length, the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One reviews have been largely positive and the film currently holds an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics have taken issue with the film's somewhat under-baked villain and his connection to Ethan's past, or the movie's plotting, the runtime is not often mentioned as an issue.

This is likely down to Cruise and McQuarrie's general approach to movie runtimes, which is to let the movie play out for only as long as it continues to be entertaining. The train scene is still long at 50 minutes, but it has no dull moments, suggesting that Cruise and McQuarrie's approach to filmmaking and runtimes is working.
