“If you were listening to the rocks, they would be singing at higher and higher pitches, the deeper you go,” stated Matěj Peč, a geologist at MIT.The fissures and pores running through rocks, from the Earth’s crust to the liquid mantle, are like channels and cavities through which sound can resonate.
Geologists uncovered acoustic patterns in rocks through laboratory-based research. They conducted experiments using samples of marble and subjected them to different pressures, simulating conditions similar to those experienced in theMatěj Peč, a geologist at MIT, stated, “If you were listening to the rocks, they would be singing at higher and higher pitches, the deeper you go.”
This allowed the scientists to estimate the types of cracks, fissures, and defects present in the Earth's crust at different depths, helped further determine unstable regions, and understand the behavior of rocks during earthquakes and eruptions. Such a situation suggested a kind of transitional zone between the brittle surface rocks and the ductile rocks at depth. This transitional region is often referred to as the "brittle-to-ductile transition."
