Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the longest-serving leader of the Senate Republican conference, will step down in November,McConnell ascended to head the Senate GOP leadership in 2007 and has held forth as both minority leader -- as he is now -- and majority leader across that time.
“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press. “So I stand before you today ... to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.” McConnell's leadership was challenged in 2022 by Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla, who has come to be a figurehead amongst the more hardline Republicans in the Senate. Scott, as well as Sens. John Thune, R-S.D., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, the current and immediate past Republican whips, are seen as the likely candidates to inherit the position.
