Carter is making his major league debut on Friday just 10 days after his 21st birthday.

Neither Carter, nor the Rangers, have ever forgotten the slight and Friday, O’Dowd said he didn’t blame them.“It’s hard thing on draft day; you don’t want to be caught by surprise,” he said. “We didn’t know what to say. But whatever we said, it wasn’t the right thing. If I met the kid, I’d apologize. It’s supposed to be a special night for the kid and I didn’t feel like I did a great job.

As a pro, Carter has shown an “innate feel for the strike zone,” O’Dowd said. He put together a .410 OBP in 1,134 minor-league plate appearances before getting the call on Thursday. Carter had 27 home runs and 66 steals in 242 minor league games. He becomes the youngest Rangers position player to debut since Nomar Mazara at 20 years, 350 days in 2016.“This is not a kid who went through the normal baseball factory of Perfect Game showcases and the like,” O’Dowd said. “He played where he grew up.

as his future. In his mind, the journey begins anew by reaching the big leagues; it doesn’t end with that accomplishment. “Hopefully this is just the start of a long career,” Carter said. “I plan to start my tenure here with the Rangers on a willing ballclub. So, I’m really excited. That’s about all I’d have to say, I guess.”
