According to the story, Butler’s great-great-grandmother, Ella Thompson, boarded the Union ship first, in order to see if the conditions would permit escape. She told her children to hide in the woods near the river and wait for her signal. Butler told us that his great-great-grandmother was welcomed by the men on board, and that she waived her handkerchief to call for her children to join her.
“When I heard the story for the first time from my father, I was extremely proud,” Butler said. “I had goosebumps, and I was just amazed.”
