The National Park Service says the mom shouted and yelled at the cougar, scaring it off and quickly ended the attack.
PORT ANGELES, Washington — An 8-year-old girl was attacked by cougar while camping in a national park in Washington state, but the girl’s mom saved the child from serious injury by scaring the large cat off, officials say.
“The cougar casually abandoned its attack after being yelled and screamed at by the child’s mother,” the news release says. The child was taken to a hospital and was treated for minor injuries. Officials expressed concern because cougars usually avoid humans and attacks are “extraordinarily rare.” If found, the cougar will be euthanized and removed from the park for a necropsy, authorities say.
Visitors instead should “appear as large as possible, keep eyes on the animal, make lots of noise and shout loudly. Throwing rocks or objects at the cougar is also recommended.”
