Meet stylist Morinsola “Momo” Hassan-Odukale
“As a visual artist, Lagos does really inspire me,” Hassan-Odukale says. “There is something so special about it as a city: the landscape, being surrounded by water and so much greenery, the beauty of the people, the hustle, and even hardship. Lagos doesn’t stop. The best part is working with the people here. It’s the spirit of coming together and making it work even when against all odds.
Style is deeply personal for Hassan-Odukale. “My style is just who I am. And I know it’s something that I don’t share with anyone else in this world.” she says. “My style is the experiences I’ve had. It’s the places I’ve traveled to. It’s just my own special experience and life that I’ve had.” Momo’s wardrobe includes many pieces from Nigerian designers— Kenneth Ize, Bloke, Meji Meji, Lisa Folawiyo, CLAN, Kadiju, and more—which she styles in a fun, Gen-Z way.
However, Momo won’t distance herself from the label simply because she does believe in its values of self-expression and identity. “And then again, for me, the alté subculture is really about freedom and liberation and just really being able to express yourself how you want to,” she says. “I think there could be two people in the subculture that dress very differently, but I guess it’s that vibe and that energy that is kind of putting them in that same subculture.
